NAEP is a federally mandated project sponsored by the National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES) within the U.S. Department of Education that consists of assessments in:
Mathematics, reading, science, writing, technology and engineering literacy, arts, civics, geography, economics, and U.S. History;
Is administered in grades 4, 8, and 12;
Is administered across the country and, by extension, across all of Illinois;
Provides demographic breakdowns of student performance in the context of gender, race/ethnicity, public or private school, teacher experience, and other factors.
Some form of national assessment has been offered annually since 1969 in the United States.
