Beginning in 2018, each Illinois school is receiving a Summative Designation, a measure of progress in academic performance and student success. This school has received the Summative Designation stated on the screen. Reasons for the Summative Designation are indicated on the following screen. Multiple measures determine which one of four Summative Designations is appropriate for this school.

Exemplary – Schools performing in the top 10 percent of schools statewide with no underperforming student groups.

Commendable – A school that has no underperforming student groups, a graduation rate greater than 67 percent, and whose performance is not in the top 10 percent of schools statewide.

Underperforming – A school in which one or more student groups is performing at or below the level of the “all students” group in the lowest performing 5 percent of schools.

Lowest Performing – A school that is in the lowest-performing 5 percent of schools in Illinois and any high school with a graduation rate of 67 percent or less.

Student groups used in the calculations include major racial and ethnic identities, students with Individual Education Plans (special education), English language learners, and students from low-income families. In order to protect students’ privacy, a group must include at least 10 students in order to be counted in the calculation of Summative Designations.

Illinois’ new accountability system has been designed to identify schools that will receive help to improve students’ success. Underperforming and Lowest-Performing schools will receive additional funding and supports to build local capacity and improve student outcomes. Multiple measures of school performance and growth determine a school’s designation. The federal Every Student Succeeds Act requires states to provide a summative designation for every public school.

Calculations for K-8 school Designations include the following factors in 2018:

  • Percent of students proficient in English Language Arts (10%)
  • Percent of students proficient in Math (10%)
  • English Learner Progress to Proficiency (5%)
  • English Language Arts Growth (25%)
  • Math Growth (25%)
  • Chronic absenteeism rate (20%)
  • Climate Survey (5% - Full credit for all schools)

Calculations for 9-12 school Designations include the following in 2018:

  • Percent of students proficient in English Language Arts (10%)
  • Percent of student proficient in Math (10%)
  • English Learner Progress to Proficiency (5%)
  • Graduation rate (50%)
  • Chronic absenteeism rate (7.5%)
  • Percent of 9th Graders on Track to Graduate (6.25%)
  • Percent of students ready for College and Careers (6.25% - Full credit for all schools)
  • Climate Survey (5% - Full credit for all schools)
