The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requires every state to measure school performance, establish long-term goals for student outcomes, and identify schools that need additional support. Illinois' accountability system, Profiles of Performance, brings together multiple measures of student outcomes, progress, engagement, and school experience while keeping the individual measures visible. There are five performance levels that apply to each indicator and the overall profile. Because Profiles of Performance reflect multiple measures, different combinations of Core, Elevating, and student group performance can result in the same overall profile.
Understanding Your School’s Profile of Performance
A Profile of Performance brings together multiple measures to provide a broader view of school performance. Before interpreting a school’s profile, keep these five things in mind:
The overall profile is not an average or a score.
- Illinois does not combine indicators using percentage weights. Core indicators establish the foundation of the profile, while Elevating indicators can raise — but not lower — the result.
- The same overall profile can reflect different patterns of performance. Schools can arrive at the same performance level in different ways. Look at the individual indicators to understand a school’s particular strengths and areas for improvement.
- Student group performance matters. Each qualifying student group receives its own Profile of Performance. A school cannot receive an Exemplary or Approaching Exemplary overall profile if any student group has a Comprehensive profile.
- A Profile of Performance is not the same as school improvement status. The annual profile describes performance. CSI, ATSI, and TSI identify schools that meet federal criteria for additional support.
- The profile is a starting point, not the whole story. Profiles provide consistent statewide signals that can help identify patterns and questions to explore. They should be considered alongside other school and local information.
