Average number of pupils per teacher

  • Explanation of Display Exp. of Display
  • Context
  • Resources

This information is reported at the district level. The display shows the average number of pupils per teacher. This is calculated using the fall enrollment for the school year divided by the number of full-time equivalent (FTE) teachers in the district. Teachers classified as special education teachers are not included. Unit districts show both the elementary and high school pupil/teacher ratios on all displays.

Click 5 Years Trend or 10 Years Trend to view long term data.

Note: FTE = Full Time Equivalent

Research indicates that children in lower grades show the potential for higher achievement scores when they are in smaller classes. Many factors contribute to student achievement, and class size is only one part of this bigger picture. Special education classes are not included in this calculation.
