Health and Wellness

This display shows the average number of days of Physical Education per week per student. District and state averages are shown for comparison. Learn More

The physical education and training courses offered in grades 5 through 10 may include health education.

For students of all ages, physical education provides opportunities to learn motor skills, develop fitness, build team skills, strengthen problem solving abilities, and learn about healthy lifestyles. A healthy, physically active student is more likely to be alert and successful in academic endeavors. Many health organizations recommend that children and adolescents participate in at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day in order to help prevent childhood obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

  • Help Kids Get Moving Parent Resources (Let's Move Active Schools)

  • AHA Recommendations for Physical Activity in Children (American Heart Association)

  • How Much Activity do Children Need? (Center for Disease Control and Prevention)

  • Public Act 097-0671
